The Workshop

Sashiko is the Japanese art of repairing fabric by sewing beautiful geometric patterns onto it. This visible mending technique embraces the history of the fabric, turning each tear and repair into a part of its story. Instead of discarding ripped garments, participants will learn to create sustainable and stunning pieces.
Our sashiko workshops are flexible: participants can bring their own torn clothes to repair, or they can work on sewing a tote bag or tea towel to practice the technique and create a beautifully decorated accessory. They will learn proper sashiko stitching techniques and explore various traditional geometric patterns. By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with a repaired garment or a newly decorated item.

Workshop Plan

We’ll arrive early to set up and walk you through the workshop plan. Participants can choose to work on their own items or use provided materials, such as tote bags or decorative pillowcases, depending on your project.
  • Introduction: We'll introduce the concept of sashiko, demonstrating the proper stitch techniques and traditional patterns.
  • Personalisation: Participants can select their project, pattern, and thread colour.
  • Sashiko Embroidery: Participants will be able to work on their project. They can either bring something they want to repair, or use of the provided objects to decorate.
  • Guidance: While we guide the group as a whole, we’ll also provide individual assistance as needed.
  • Completion: Participants will leave with their completed project. If they need more time, we’ll provide enough thread and a needle to finish at home. We’ll stay to tidy up and debrief with you.

Who Is the Workshop For?

This workshop is perfect for anyone interested in working with fabric, reducing fast fashion waste, or exploring embroidery. It’s a great choice for those wanting to try something unique and mindful. Sashiko embroidery also makes a fantastic gift, so participants can work on a special present for someone. No prior knowledge is required, and participants can bring their own item to work on or use one of the provided materials.

Provided Tools and Materials

We supply everything needed for the workshop:
  • Fabric patches
  • Sashiko needles and thread
  • Tailor’s chalk
  • Items to repair (if needed)
  • Step-by-step guidance

Requirements

We need a space with tables and chairs for all participants.
  • When?

We offer workshops and events any day of the week, including weekends, from 9 AM to 11 PM. This flexibility means we can accommodate almost any schedule! Whether you want a quick one-hour session or a more extended event, we’re here to make it work for you. For larger events we can also run workshops back to back so everyone can have a go.

  • Where?

Our cozy studio in Chiswick is unfortunately not suitable for hosting workshops. Instead, we bring the workshop to you! You'll need to provide us with a suitable space we can use for the workshop. We’re based in West London but can travel anywhere within the city. If your event is outside London, we'll include transportation and any necessary accommodation in your quote.

  • Quotes and Fees

Our quotes are based on the materials needed, time worked, and any potential travel and accommodation. We strive for transparency and will discuss the quote with you to ensure it meets your expectations.

We typically ask for half the payment upfront to cover the necessary tools and materials. The remaining balance is due after the workshop is completed.
